Outdoor Photography
Taking photos is a great way to document your camping trip. Take pictures of your camping activities, unique plants and wildlife you find on your trip. One fun thing to do is go on a photo safari. Make a list of things to photograph and seek them out. When you are done you can put them in a scrap book or family photo album.
Fishing
Fishing is one of America's favorite pastimes. For generations the sport of fishing has been passed down from parents to their children.
There are many types of fishing to include shore fishing, boat fishing, netting, fish trapping and even catching fish with your hands. You can catch fish for your dinner or release them back into the water. The most common form of fishing is by the use of a fishing rod and fish hook.
Mountain Biking
Mountain biking is a fun way to get out and see the great outdoors. You can cover longer distances with less effort on a mountain bike than hiking.
A specialty bike called a you guessed it "Mountain Bike" is required for mountain biking. Also a helmet is recommended because no matter how careful you are accidents do happen.
Mountain bikes are different than bikes made to ride on paved roadways. You can take a mountain bike anywhere including off road, on trails, over rough terrain and even roadways.
Rock Climbing
Rock Climbing cliffs and mountains can be fun but also dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. Knowledge of proper rock climbing techniques and specialized equipment is required to safely rock climb.
But bouldering a form of rock climbing can be enjoyed with the minimal amount of equipment and skills. Bouldering consists of climbing short low routes usually on a large rock or boulder. A spotter, a person below the climber that is ready to prevent them from striking dangerous objects, is a must as well as the use of a helmet.
Canoeing
Canoeing is an ideal camping activity for your family camping trip. You can go out on the water for a few hours or go canoe camping for several days. Canoeing is an opportunity to get close to nature and visit out of the way destinations.
You can buy your own canoe or rent them from an outdoor shop or campground. It is a good form of exercise but if you take your time it does not have to be a strenuous sport. Does fast moving water make your nervous. Well don't be. You can travel on easy moving waterways and carry or "portage" the canoe around faster rougher waters.
Swimming
Swimming is a fun summer time camping activity. Many campgrounds have swimming pools available. There are also a lot of lakes, streams and rivers that you can swim in the outdoors. So pack up your swimming suit with the rest of your camping equipment and enjoy this cool refreshing treat.
Geocaching
Ahoy! Matey! Geocaching is a very popular modern day treasure hunting game. Basically people hide small caches containing a logbook and filled with various low cost trinkets and toys. They then post the coordinates on various websites dedicated to the activity.
You then seek out and find these "treasure chests." Once found you are expected to put your name in the log book and trade one of the items found inside the cache with something of your own.
Hiking
Hiking is one of the basic outdoor activities people participate in when they go camping. Anyone can enjoy hiking from toddlers to senior citizens. Regular hiking doesn't require any special skills. All you need to do is lace up a good pair of boots or hiking shoes and walk.
