Muir Woods National Monument is home to an ancient stand of coast redwood forest. Donated to the Federal Government this area was proclaimed a National Monument on February 9, 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt. At the original owner's request it was named after John Muir the famous conservationist who some consider the father of our National Parks system.

On Saturday, February 7, 2009, Muir Woods National Monument is hosting its annual Muir Woods Earth Day celebration and they are looking for volunteers. Enjoy this wonderful park while helping to restore and preserve an old growth redwood forest.

No experience is necessary and everyone 7 years old and up are encouraged to attend. They need Volunteers for the following projects; planting, habitat restoration and weed removal, mulching, tending the forest floor and trail maintenance. To say thanks Muir Woods National Monument will be providing a free BBQ lunch.
